The War on SUVs The most explosive element of the plan is a formal review into charging owners of large SUVs—popularly known as "supersize cars"—higher fees for parking and road access. The Mayor’s office has cited harrowing safety data to justify the move. Research indicates that SUVs are 14% more likely to kill pedestrians and 209% more likely to kill children under nine than standard cars, largely due to their height and the design of their raised bonnets .

A Divided Capital While safety advocates and the Green Party have hailed the plan as a necessary step to protect vulnerable road users, it has met fierce resistance from political opponents. Critics have characterized the proposal as an "ideological family car tax" that will disproportionately affect lower-income families who may share larger vehicles.
